Dietary Counseling

We employ professional dieticians to assist in the nutritional needs of our patients. Often our patients have complex diets that must be followed, depending on their health conditions. Every dietician’s first step is to provide their patient with comfort by ensuring that their health is optimal even during their end of life.

With the dieticians at Hospice of the South Coast, you can expect the following:

  • Assessment of the nutritional needs of their patient.
  • Speaking with the patient and their family to understand their needs.
  • Converse with the treating physician on their patient’s medical history.
  • Ensure a customized nutritional plan is created encompassing all the requirements of the individual patient.
  • Educate the family and the patient on the nutrition and the diet to be followed.

The dietary plan from our certified dieticians play an important role in the lives of many patients, especially those suffering from, but not limited to:

  1. Cancer
  2. Alzheimer and Dementia
  3. Tube feedings
  4. Cardiac conditions
  5. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

When a patient is suffering from terminal illness or nearing the end of their life, they do not have the capacity to support the digestion of all foods. In fact, their body starts rejecting fresh nutrients, instead of breaking down the existing cells for functioning purposes. With the help of dietary counseling, you can identify the food that your body can retain, process and take nutrition from. Dieticians at Hospice of the South Coast will help their patients evaluate their food intake and empower them to make healthy choices.
