Respite Hospice Care is provided by Hospice of the South Coast as a benefit to assist the family in the difficulties of caring for the hospice patient. Respite hospice care is provided for up to 5 days as a way for family members to be able to rest from the daily task of caring for their loved one. Respite hospice care is provided in a hospice contracted facility and is paid for by the hospice medicare benefit. Hospice of the South Coast coordinates all care and continues to see the patient while he/she is under respite care. Respite hospice care is not intended to be utilized as a permanent placement, but to provide support to family members who are providing care. The hospice social worker is a valuable resource for family members who are interested in utilizing the respite hospice care benefit.
